The idea of adding more clothes to some might be ‘un-sexy’ as every year society tries to expose more skin not less of it. But don’t be fooled! Just because you’re wearing extra layers of clothing doesn’t make you any less sexy, it simply means your man will need a little extra time to remove them. Wink wink.
The idea behind layering is to stretch your wardrobe and take basics year-round but it's also very practical; if it’s a bit chilly in the AM you can simply remove your sweater by the afternoon when the sun comes out and slip it back on around sunset. There are several ways to master this ‘art’ of dressing however; and the first is to understand what you’re layering for: warmth or style. On a cold December morning, you might be a little more concerned with the former. But if being chic is your aim, there is an art to layering and you can’t just mesh clothes over clothes for the sake of putting clothes over clothes! Pay attention to the colors, shades, patterns, material, size, shape and style of the clothing for optimum layering results.
The first thing you need to remember when jumping on the layering band wagon is thinner layers first. A cotton t shirt, dress or turtleneck can be easily covered with a wrap sweater or vest; the other way around, not so comfortable. While you want to be fashionable there is no question that you must be contented too. It doesn’t feel good to limit your arm span because the layered sweaters you’re sporting are fitting too snugly.
Layering is best suited for casual occasions but it doesn’t mean that several classic pieces can’t be added for extra pop. A wife beater for example, can be worn under a vest or tailored blazer or both and a bright neck scarf to add a bit of oomph.
Since the layered look became more fashionable a couple of years ago, the most popular women’s style was perhaps the tights under the mini skirt but another unlikely sexy look emerged: lightweight skirts and dresses over jeans. Skinny or straight leg jeans are best worn with skirts that aren’t too full or past knee length but be aware of your jeans being too pocket heavy or bulky with designs. Because jeans are naturally thicker in fabric than regular dress pants or casual slacks, the dress should never be tight enough to divulge every bulge and crease around your hips. If you have two big pockets in the back, two in the front and puffy belt tabs, it will definitely show when you wear a form fitting dress.
Layering funky t-shirts over long-sleeved t shirts is another extremely popular trend for both men and women alike. The key to pulling this style off is to pay attention to shirt size, for example: you probably won’t wear a baggy long sleeved t shirt under a tight fitting short sleeved one for obvious reasons. Similar to the dress and jeans concept, the tight t shirt would only crumple up the baggy one underneath causing it to look as if you mindlessly threw two shirts together. Dressing for style is dressing with style; it should be done for fun, done with flair but also done right! When dressing for warmth, we’ve traditionally seen short sleeves under long sleeves but this reversed style became so successful that designers began making clothes that were sewn with the illusion of a long sleeved shirt under a short sleeved one.
The general rule with layering is to layer garments that would still make an outfit work if you wore them separately. If you removed the jacket from your sweater, the sweater from your shirt and your shirt right down to the wife beater your whole outfit would still come together perfectly
