Fry The Frizz, Curlies!

If your hair isn’t just curly but uncontrollably frazzled with ringlets and corkscrews growing in every which direction, you’re probably like the many people in the world who have had to learn to accept the locks they were blessed with. If you haven’t up to now, then 2009 should be your year. Grab a hold of your curls with a vengeance and tame them but more importantly get yourself a style that will make you feel confident, sexy and most of all love your hair. Take yourself back to earlier years when you had to learn the wrong way that putting a brush through curly hair isn’t the way to go. How about when you laid your head flat on the ironing board and tried to flatten it straight. Chemicals, pulling, and breakage - Can anybody say ‘hair abuse”? If you’re like the millions of curlies whose hair has seen the ultimate damage from previous years of mistreatment, it’s not surprising you’re searching for a better way to deal with your tresses. The following steps are ‘must do’s for an incredible do.

Consider this your frizz free bible!

Step 1: Take a serious look at your tresses. What category of curls do they fall into? Wavy-ish, large curls, a head full of ringlets, teeny weenie corkscrews? Whatever type of curl they are, they should all have one thing in common, health! If there is more frizz on your head than curl it’s time to do several things but the first is a good hearty trim.

The more damage your hair has the more your hair should be cut but fear not curly friend, your hair will grow back in phenomenal shape and it will be well worth the inches lost. Once you’ve done the major trim, consider doing this every month or two to remove a quarter of an inch. This amount is really nothing visually noticed but everything in the grand scheme of things to the health of your hair.

Step 2: Deep conditioner. Are you using it? There are so many out on the market today one can’t blame you for not knowing one from the next. There are deep conditioners for every hair type and for every budget so there’s no excuse! From Senscience Inner Restore Intensif Deep Repairing Masque at $13.80 to Kérastase Nutritive MasqueIntense at $50, any of these are great options to put in your hair and let them work their magic but be sure to put them on the ends of your hair and away from the roots, after all it’s the dryness away from the scalp that you’re trying to fix. For a more personalized deep conditioner suggestion, speak to your hair salon so they can see your hair texture and recommend a good brand just for you.

Step 3: Hair products are a necessity in a curly girls beauty regimen but it is worth spending the extra few dollars to ensure your hair is in the right product hands such as the curly hair line by Ouidad. Specifically made for curly hair, the gels, mousses, sprays and hair treatments have been designed to tame even the most untamable curls. The latest hairstyles might have more wave than curl but straightening your fringe on a daily basis will do maximum damage to your tresses that you’ll later regret when you want to leave your curls in their natural state. If your hair is extremely curly and you want to make it a little looser, try ultra thick braids when it’s damp and air dry. This will remove some of the curl and still leave a ton of waves. If you’re insistent on straightening or using a heated hair device, the Sedu straightener or one like it is best as they has ceramic plates and wont do as much damage as metal plates that literally fry the hair.

Step 4: Keeping your hairstyle current might sound old hat but its true. If you’ve ever seen an old building get run down, chances are it started off with a bit of litter here and there, then because that wasn’t cleaned, some graffiti, then that wasn’t washed away and pretty soon the entire building was worn to the ground. A silly analogy maybe but it makes the point of saying that if you don’t start caring for the overall health of your hair from the roots to the end before you know it, you’ll be in a rotten hair rut. The best way to maintain lovely healthy locks is to actually love your hair style that you’ll want to maintain its health. The latest curly looks for every hair texture can be found in hairstyle magazines and internet hairstyle galleries so don’t be afraid to try something new.

On a final note, in case you hadn’t noticed curlies, there are thousands of people on a daily basis running to hair salons to get the latest curly dos. Curling irons, hair perms, curling spritzers, curlers and anything and everything to get the very set of ringlets you were born with! Make the most of it by taking special care of your hair and keeping your curls as gorgeous as they can possibly be.
